JOSEPH REMESAR
Creator and Writer of The Space
Published by: Storyline Studios

Interviewed by: Richard Vasseur - (Posted: 5/24/2008)

Joseph Remesar

Richard: How did you end up creating "The Space"?

Joseph: I grew up in the 60’s, under the influences of American comic-books, Sci-fi novels and Star-trek TV Shows. The original short-story was an homage to all that. The idea was to recreate in some way, the memories of my childhood.

What is the storyline of "The Space"?

In the not-to-far away future, in an era dominated not by nations but by huge corporations in which Hyperspace and Artificial Intelligences are common, an experimental ship gets lost in a Galaxy’s unknown spot.

A controversial man is sent to find and rescue it:William Perez William.

Richard: Who is Captain William Perez?

Joseph: He is a complicate human being: an engineer, pirate, cowboy, mercenary, and poet; a man who must face his fears and memories, and who will lead us on a trip through his life and through the past, present and future of humanity.

Richard: How would you describe the genre of this comic?

Joseph: I am not sure; however, somebody told me is a techno-thriller.

Richard: Who are some of the other characters?

Joseph: James Whitherpool is commandant of the supership- charger The Intrepid and a very good friend of William. Grandson of a brilliant officer of the old Royal British Navy, he worked all his like for the Company. The Company is the Generic name given to an enormous group of corporations that joined together in the 21st century (primarily made up of Americans, Japanese, and Europeans) to create a monopoly on almost all the Earth. Although it prejudiced many medium sized companies and caused a lot of unemployment on the planet, their researches gave birth to the Hyperreactor’s patent, with which humanity could finally get out of the Solar System.

Norys Colmenares is an expert in Astrobiology and the last lover of her mate William. Astrobiology is the interdisciplinary study of life in space, combining aspects of astronomy, biology and geology. It is focused primarily on the study of the origin, distribution and evolution of life. It is also known as exobiology.

Jensen is an Operator. Operator is the human who operates an Artificial Intelligence (AI), they are persons chosen at a very early age because of their great sensibility towards these intelligences and for their ability to interrelate them with society.

Jenni is an Artificial Intelligence. Name generally used to designate supercomputers with similar or greater human reasoning capacities. They are intelligent machines and the Operators consider them living things, in some form not biologic. They learn just like a human child but faster, and their base programs have not been designed by human engineers for decades.

Richard: Why create "La Fisura"?

Joseph: I am very proud of my Spanish/Latin heritage and I write in Spanish most of the time, so, I think it was a must option for me. Many of my friends don’t read any English.

Richard: Has living in Ireland influenced the story in "The Space"?

Joseph: Nope, not at all. I wrote the story before going to Ireland. However, Ireland influenced me in many others literary ways, including horror fiction and the gothic novel.

Richard: Have you worked on any other comics or would you like to?

Joseph: I have worked with the extraordinary Spanish artist Jesus Barony on a Graphic-Novel, a roman-tic story that will be publish in Europe next June. Jesus Barony has been professionally into the business of comics and illustration since 1997, next to Juanjo RyP. His works have appeared in USA, Spain, UK and France, and he's been compared to Simon Bisley, Richard Corben and Alex Ross due to the high quality of his art.

I am still working in other comic-book with Javier Solar, a "terror-thriller" about a faithless priest who used to do exorcisms. He is recruited by an agency devoted to investigating extremely strange murders around the world.

Richard: How did you join up with Storyline Studios?

Joseph: I contacted him by Internet, asked if he’d take a look at some of my projects. He agreed and I just sent a package with them. He advised and helped me, you know, the European market is complete different to the American, so, we did several changes to the comic, an adapted version.

Richard: What will you be working on next in your writing career?

Joseph: I will be next week in International Fair of Comics in Barcelona, Spain, the best place for any comic-script in Spanish language, looking for some good opportunity like always. As well, I am going to publish a couple of novels this year, included a long story of "The Space", and the "terror-thriller" comic-book in Spanish, English and French languages.

Additionally, I am writing other novel, a pre-Aztec history, so, I am enough busy.

In UK, publishers repackage and commission material for comic annuals, printed and bound as hardcover A4-size books, maybe I am going to try something like that.

Richard: What do you read and which writers do you like?

Joseph: Actually, I read everything: Sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, dark&terror, political, best-sellers, fair stories, comic-books, biographies. You never know where the Muses will appear next!

I can tell you my favourites writers are: Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Mark Twain, Jack Vance, Mario Vargas Llosa, Mickey Spillane, Ursula K. Le Guin and Orson Scott Card.

Richard: What type of movies do you watch?

Joseph: Everything as well, however I prefer the action-movies. The last one I watched was an anime: Afro-Samurai

Richard: How can someone contact you?

Joseph: The best way is the email : joseph_remesar@yahoo.com

Richard: Any final words of advice?

Joseph: Corporations are corrupt, they don't care about humanity. So I would say I am a Democrat.
