KRIS CARTER
Artist of Leprechaun
Published by: Bluewater Productions

Interviewed by: Richard Vasseur - (Posted: 12/21/2008)

Kris Carter

Richard: How does your art capture the fun part of this character?

Kris: I have a pretty twisted sense of humor myself, so I am trying to inject a little of that into Leprechaun.

Richard: Will you get the chance to illustrate any other magical creatures other than this one leprechaun?

Kris: Oh, there are a ton of other Leprechauns and their evil counterparts, the Clurichaun, to create and design for this series. I am an old school high fantasy nerd so the subject matter and the horror aspects are right in my wheelhouse.

Richard: Is a leprechaun harder to draw than a normal person?

Kris: Not really. I had to do a few extra sketches to get his "unique" anatomy correct. That is par for the course though as an illustrator, especially for Comic Books, I am called on every day to draw something new, and a lot of the times, something impossible.

Richard: Have you seen any of the Leprechaun movies?

Kris: I had seen most of them when I was younger. For research you cannot trust your memory. I bought all of the movies, even Leprechaun in the Hood, and forced my wife to watch all of them with me.

Richard: Does your art bring across the horrific nature of the Leprechaun?

Kris: I think that the Leprechaun movies are a bit of a joke now. People roll their eyes if you say that they were ever scary. I am trying to visually turn the Leprechaun into a bad ass evil and angry bastard. This is emphasized in issue 2 where I get to draw the equivalent of Leprechaun Hostel. You are going to have to check it out to see what I mean.

Richard: How did you end up being an artist on comic books?

Kris: That is an easy one. In fourth grade a friend of mine gave me Wolverine #17. I have been trying to teach myself to draw ever since.

Richard: Do you think you have captured the essence of the movies in your art?

Kris: Yes and no. I want the books to be less of a joke. There is plenty of dark humor, but the cheese factor has been scaled way back. It is definitely less ham-fisted, and clunky.

Richard: Do you have any other jobs besides drawing?

Kris: Nope, but with the way the economy is going, you never know. Why, are you hiring? :)

Richard: What is next for you career wise?

Kris: Don't know. I have talked to Darren at BlueWater about doing something after Leprechaun, but nothing is definite. I do have a creator owned book, Epoch, coming out from Arcana soon, and I am always working on more than one project.

Richard: Do you believe in the supernatural?

Kris: I am as Pragmatist, and a Scientist. I need cold, hard, repeatable facts, to believe in anything. So I guess the answer is no.I do love the fiction though.

Richard: How do you feel about horror comics as compared to superhero ones?

Kris: I love the Horror genre, but my first love is Superheroes.

Richard: How can someone contact you?

Kris: My Blog " http://kristecarter.blogspot.com/ " My Email " carterkris@yahoo.com " or twitter "https://twitter.com/KrisCarter" Or really anywhere on the internet, All of profile names are my name, anonymity is for cowards, so if you see Kris Carter on a message board, it is probably me.

Richard: Any last words of advice?

Kris: If you truly want to get into this industry, you need to ask yourself "What am I willing to sacrifice?" If the answer is anywhere short of "everything and everyone" you really aren't ready.
