SCOTT DAVIS
Writer of Vincent Price Presents # 5
Published by: Bluewater Productions

Interviewed by: Allen Klingelhoets - (Posted: 11/1/2008)

Scott Davis

Allen: Tell me about some of your history. Where do you live, what's your family life like, what colleges did you go to?

Scott: A long, long, time ago in a state far far away (Long Island) I grew up went to school, moved across country went to college (Cal State Northridge), got a succession of marketing jobs, and raised a family. I am based in San Diego and am a full time marketing exec who dabbles as a comic book writer.

Allen: Did you read many comics in your youth? What sort of stories did you read?

Scott: When I was a kid, allowance was spent on two things and two things only: baseball cards and comic books. I was a big fan of the JLA, especially the stories that featured Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow or The Atom. I was never really into Batman or Superman.

Allen: Which people in comic book industry influenced you to venture forth into comic business?

Scott: It's got to be Darren Davis. Without him I would just be another marketing director and frustrated novelist!

Allen: Tell me about your role in creating comic book.

Scott: I write the story, script the panels for the artist and dialog the book.

Allen: What kind of things in past have you wrote for comic books? Which companies have you worked for?

Scott: I have written several titles: Orion the Hunter, Blackbeard's Legacy, Wrath of the Titans, 20 Million Miles More and the Elementals...all for Bluewater!

Allen: Tell me how you found work at Bluewater Productions.

Scott: I guess I was born into the right family. Darren Davis is my younger brother.

Allen: Tell me about why you wanted to write Vincent Price Presents # 5.

Scott: Who wouldn't want to. It's an honor to considered to be part of a legacy that has influenced popular culture for nearly a century.

Allen: Is story based on past Vincent Price movie? What genre is story?

Scott: The story is original. However it is one of those genre-transcendent stories...much like the original Twilight Zones. So if I were forced to choose, I would say speculative fiction.

Allen: Give me details about story and characters.

Scott: Here to There is a self contained story of a once lauded writer who has lost his muse. He takes to the streets as a cab driver in order to find inspiration, but only finds himself sucked into a vacuum of his own neurosis, lack of purpose and fear of failure. After a traffic accident, he starts getting some rather odd passengers who end up teaching him something about himself. And when you put it in context with the supernatural, you get a Vincent Price Presents story.

Allen: What are some of your favorite Vincent Price movies?

Scott: The easy answer is the collaborative movies he did with Roger Corman: the adaptations of the Edgar Allen Poe stories and possibly the House on Haunted Hill and House of Wax. However, my admiration for the man's abilities really extend way beyond the horror genre. He was wonderful in Preminger's Laura.

Allen: Who is artist and cover artist for Vincent Price Presents # 5? Also, what is name of story you are writing for issue # 5?

Scott: Rey Armenteros really did a fascinating job with the artwork. I thought it captured the concept and the tone of the book particularly well. " Each panel is like an expressionist painting rather than a sketch. The title of the issue is "Here to There."

Allen: Take me through an average writing day on Vincent Price comic.

Scott: I guess I get up, drink a bucket of blood, wander the dreary moors for an hour or so before I am driven mad by the sound of my late wife's voice and forced to capture a bland looking male lead type and cut him in half with a giant swinging blade. Then I use his terror-filled screams to power my PC and begin the tormented process of eviscerating thought into coherent sentences. Pretty much like any other day.

Allen: What is it about Casey Morrow (cab driver in issue # 5) which you liked writing about?

Scott: Casey, like many other characters I have created contains elements of my personality. He is a complex character full of contradictions and what especially liked was going on the ride with him and exploring some of his less than sparkling personality traits and ultimately finding his road to his personal redemption. Its not so much a story about spooky ghosts walking through walls, but the ghosts inside this particular character.

Allen: What do you feel has been high point of your career?

Scott: I hope I haven't reached it yet. However, there is a project that I am currently working on with another well known cultural icon that I think could be the crowning achievement of my career. You'll know who and what it is when Bluewater is set to announce it. But, to date, I would have to choose working with Ray Harryhausen to frame and write Wrath of the Titans surely ranks up there.

Allen: Will you be writing any future Vincent Price Presents comic books?

Scott: Because it is an anthology series, I think it is highly likely that another one of my stories will find its way into comic form. There is one on the back burner called Schrödinger's Cat Sings the Blues that will probably see the light of day late in 2009...that story is about the perils and pitfalls of living forever.

Allen: Do you have any future projects on any other comic books?

Scott: In the next couple months, my four issue limited series War of the Elementals comes out. This is a monster-alternative history book that I am particularly proud of. And as I mentioned before, I am currently working on a rather game-changing new series that I have promised not to divulge the details. Suffice to say, even an old cynical warhorse like me, is very excited about the project.

Allen: Do you write other things than comic books? If so please talk about them.

Scott: Business proposals, web sites, data sheets, newsletters and marketing plans! I am a marketing executive for a national content management information company by day....comic book writer by night!

Allen: What do you do with spare time you have?

Scott: Spare time? Really? I love going to see my wretched San Diego Padres lose to whomever they are playing. I am obsessed with my obscenely large music collection and I coach and play softball.

Allen: Who has inspired you most in your life?

Scott: Creatively...hands down - Rod Serling. In life, my wife Martha and my kids Emma and Brett. Everything I have become is simply because of them.

Allen: Do you read any comic books at present time?

Scott: It's probably terrible to say this, but no.

Allen: Which comic books would you some day like to write?

Scott: When Joss Whedon decides to continue the Firefly universe into the comic world, I would be totally on board with that!

Allen: Which artists do you hope to some day work with?

Scott: To be honest, I like working with the up-and-comers who don't have a large published portfolio. There are a lot of extremely talented artists with strong eyes and great ideas out there who just don't have a lot of by-lines.

Allen: What kind of super powers do you wish you had?

Scott: Funny you should ask....I am conflicted on this. Some days it's the ability to always have exact change, sometimes it's the power to talk to ducks or turn things into cheese. However, today I feel like I want be able to transform dry erase markers into permanent markers.

Allen: What kind of novels, magazines do you like to read?

Scott: I am constantly reading...all genres, all types. However, I am particularly partial to the works of James Morrow, Kurt Vonnegut, China Mieville and George Orwell.

Allen: Did you see many movies in theater over last few months?

Scott: Only the big ones....Indiana Jones, Iron Man. But I'm a big Netflix fan...I just got this cool toy that allows me to see my Netflix choices on my TV called Roku...coolest gift I've received in years!

Allen: Are you planning on going to any comic book conventions?

Scott: I typically can be found roaming the cavernous halls at ComicCon in San Diego.

Allen: Do you have website?

Scott: Only my business site which I'm sure your readers could care less about. However, you can read about my comic book exploits on the Bluewater website: www.bluewaterprod.com .

Allen: How can someone contact you?

Scott: Through Bluewater.

Allen: Do you have any final words about writing in comic book industry?

Scott: Writers write. The only way you improve is to be continuously applying your craft. It doesn't matter if it is a story that will never see the light of day, or a letter to your dear Auntie B or a sales brochure...writers write. Oh, and keep a pad and pencil on your bed stand, you never know when ideas will hit.
