GREG PAULSEN
Artist of Paparazzi
Published by: Bluewater Productions

Interviewed by: Allen Klingelhoets - (Posted: 6/7/2008)

Greg Paulsen

Allen: Tell us something about yourself.

Gregg: Well I live in davenport, Iowa I'm married with too many children, heh.

Allen: How long have you been artist? Do you recall some of your first comic book things you liked to draw?

Gregg: I think I got really serious about it when I was 15, and Thor and Shazam were favorites.

Allen: What was the first comic book you ever read?

Gregg: G.I. Joe #1 first book I had ever bought with my own money.

Allen: What comic book artists helped with your decision to turn pro?

Gregg: Art Adams, John Byrne, Neal Adams, George Perez' were the first guys who's work made me think this was something I wanted to do the rest of my life.

Allen: How supportive has your family been with decision to be comic book artist?

Gregg: Very, I think they agree with me that its the only thing I am good at, heh.

Allen: How did you get involved in the comic book industry? Also how long have you been working for Bluewater Productions?

Gregg: Well I started as a assistant to Phil Hester helping him with a few books here and there, and he kept on me to get more and more work out there, he’s always been a big help in me getting better with my craft but I'm kinda lazy when it comes to doing samples, mainly cause I have no real interest in working at Marvel or DC, I know that sounds crazy but it is true, I have more fun working for the Indy's due to there being a little more freedom and your not working with long established characters, your working with new and fresh ones so I find it a little more rewarding, I honestly would be intimidated working at Marvel or DC.

Allen: What were some of previous series you worked on?

Gregg: Black Tide, Gwailo, Dungeons and Dragons: Black and White, The Wretch.

Allen: Tell me about Paparazzi.

Gregg: Basically a tabloid magazine finds that it is bored with chasing after run of the mill stars & starlets, and begins stalking superheroes, and ruining their lives in and out of print.

Allen: Who are some of the characters in Paparazzi comic?

Gregg: Well the most interesting characters in the story are actually the reporters the heroes are almost secondary, but there's a slimy photographer named Glenn, 2 Reporters named Steven and Claudia, and the overly pushy editor Sara Michaels. and a wide variety of Bluewater heroes.

Allen: What do you like most about drawing Paparazzi?

Gregg: The story is very, very good so that's one of the perks, and the other cool thing is that there are different heroes to draw in every issue.

Allen: I suppose it is not hard to imagine an LA entertainment newspaper stopping covering celebrity tabloids and starting to focus on the superhero community. Why would staff writer Sara Michael's and her photographer Glen Barry want to damage reputation of superheroes?

Gregg: Because in our little comic book world a superhero is as much a open target for scandal and scrutiny and any " celebrity ", so as far as they are concerned heroes are fair game.

Allen: When can we find this comic book on the stands?

Gregg: Before 2008 is up, heh. I'm currently penciling #2 at the moment.

Allen: Tell me about rest of team that is working on Paparazzi.

Gregg: Well along with Darren Davis as writer his co-writer is a very talented guy named Adam Gragg, and my Inker is another awesomely talented fellow named Lebeau Underwood.

Allen: How did the concept of Paparazzi come about?

Gregg: Well that's more of a question for Darren and Adam, basically they wrote it and asked me to draw it, heh.

Allen: Tell me about your art work on Bluewater Productions comic Judo Girl. Can you give me some history on story? This will help readers become aware of series.

Gregg: Well I came on Judo Girl very late I'm not even drawing issue one I'm starting on issue 2, and I'll be handling the art on issues 2-4, she’s was a 70's hero trapped in a statue and was accidentally released by the hero, Atlas, and she decides to try and pick up where her life left off before she was trapped, she’s a great fun character and the story is a lot of fun and action packed.

Allen: What's new with Judo Girl (Diana Moore)?

Gregg: Basically like I said she’s trying to pick up her hero life where she left off, and she’s realizing it's much more difficult now then it was when she started.

Allen: When will new issues of Judo Girl be published?

Gregg: well I'm in the middle of drawing # 2 right now, so after its inked colored and letter I'm sure you'll be able to find it at some comic store:)

Allen:: What conventions will you be attending or have attended?

Gregg: Well I will be at the Icon in Des Moines, Iowa on may 17th and Wizard World Chicago, June 26-29th

Allen: How can someone contact you?

Gregg: atomicgregg@yahoo.com , feel free to e-mail me any time. :)

Allen: Where can interested person see samples of your work?

Gregg: deviantart.com/greggpaulsen that's the easiest one. ;)

Allen: What are your hobbies and recreational activities?

Gregg: I love cooking for some reason if I wasn't a artist I would want to be a cook I think, heh, and I'm HUGE Movie buff.

Allen: If you can have 6 dinner guests, 3 fictional and 3 real-life from any time period, who would those 6 people be and why?

Gregg: Well fictional - Bugs Bunny- I mean come on, who wouldn't want to talk to Bugs Bunny :) Batman- I would ask him for a loan, or at least take the Batmobile for a quick spin around the block. And Greg House, just because I would finally have someone in my house who is a bigger sarcastic jerk than I am, heh.

Real Life - George Carlin- I'm going to have at one genius eat in my home. Chuck Jones - OK 2 geniuses eat in my house. Forrest J Akerman- I would love to just sit and listen to him tell stories about the early days of sci fi fantasy.

Allen: If you could go into any time machine, what year would you stop at and tell us why.

Gregg: 1980 when John Lennon was shot I would see about trying to prevent that.

Allen: What TV shows, movies, cartoons do you like?

Gregg: I'm a big horror movie fan so I like a lot of different horror movies, cartoons: any looney tunes stuff is great, Ben 10 is quite good, and I'm really enjoy the new spectacular spider-man cartoon as well.

Allen: What books do you enjoy?

Gregg: I'm a big true crime reader that stuff has always fascinated me.

Allen: Do you work in any other field like marketing, advertising or media? Or are you lucky and have enough work with Bluewater Productions?

Gregg: Well I'm penciling 2 books right now for Bluewater, and I have 2 more for them in the pipeline, as well as a BIG project that I can't talk about anymore with another publisher.

Allen: What comic books do you read now?

Gregg: Invincible, walking dead, Thor, Hulk, Ultimates, and that's pretty much it

Allen: What gives you your creative energy?

Gregg: looking at other peoples work, I see it and it just makes me want to work harder.

Allen: This ends the interview, any encouraging words of wisdom?

Gregg: To all those out there still trying to get published or get a book off the ground just keep at it if you are confident and determined it will happen. ;)
