ASH JACKSON
Artist and Colorist of Eve: Vampire Diva

by Richard Vasseur - (Posted: 10/15/2007)

Ash Jackson

Richard: How did you end up working on "Eve: Vampire Diva"?

Ash: I met Frank through an ad on Digitalwebbing.com, which is an amazingly useful site for artist, writers, etc. Frank was looking for an artist to draw a few different ideas, he told me about a couple and we ended up working on the first 8 pages of Eve. A couple months later I got a email from him telling me he found a publisher, and here we are.

Richard: Do you enjoy drawing creatures of the night?

Ash: I love it! werewolves, vampires, dragons, fish-man, pig-men-essentially any man/animal combo can be fun!

Richard: How do you bring across the killer instinct in your drawings of Eve?

Ash: Eve is a bad-ass character so it's not hard, but she is also complicated, one of the reasons I like working on Eve is that Frank has given all characters personality, it makes it more fun to draw, and to read. But as far as killer instinct, wait till issue 4, you haven't seen anything yet!

Richard: How would you describe the way you draw Eve?

Ash: The same way I draw everything, I always try to put my best effort into whatever comic I'm working on. Sometimes it can be hard if you aren't digging the story. but I try to only work on stories I like nowadays. And Eve is definitely one of my favorite books.

Richard: How do you go about coloring a comic?

Ash: I use Adobe Photoshop, coloring is a time consuming process, first I flat color a page, that is just base colors with no shadows or effects, and after that I shadow everything, then I apply layers, some to ad hints of color like a lot of dark blue for nighttime shadows, then layers for effects, like lights, magic(lots of that in Eve) it takes a long time, but I'm always happy with the end result, and hopefully other people dig it as well.

Richard: What is "The Onyx Obelisk"?

Ash: The Onyx Obelisk is a story my brother and I came up with a few years back, its about a boy named Tip who has to go on a massive journey from his home town "doe haven" to the "windy Valley" to awaken an ancient lizard man paladin. It's a pretty big story, I hope to one day get it published (or at least finish drawing it!)

Richard: Do you have any formal training?

Ash: No, I never even went to any school, I was home schooled, but as soon as I could hold a pencil I was drawing, and my parents always made sure we had plenty of blank pads available. someday I may consider attending an art school but right now I'm to busy and poor.

Richard: Do you have any future projects planned?

Ash: Right now I'm focusing on finishing up the last issue of Eve. But Frank and I have been discussing a few ideas.

Richard: What was your first published art?

Ash: hmm That would depend, I had a comic strip in my town paper four or five years ago, and after that I've worked on some self published stories like Elvenkind. But Eve will probably be what I consider my first official published work.

Richard: Did you enjoy working on "Elvenkind and Praxis"?

Ash: Yeah, both stories were written by Jerry Bonner. He is a cool guy, and very creative. Unfortunately we never got a publisher to sign on. I talked with him not long ago though, and now he's working on getting into the videogame biz.

Richard: How was "Home Schooled" created?

Ash: At first my brother and I just came up with comics loosely based on events that happened to our friends/family and us that we thought were funny, but a little over two years ago my father told me a blog that he likes (www.presurfer.com) was looking for someone to do a weekly strip, we already had a bunch of comics done so we showed him our work. Now two years later we're still going. Obviously a lot of the jokes are just fiction at this point, but there are still some that are based on actual events.

Richard: How can someone contact you?

Ash: My email address is jacksoncomics@yahoo.com

Richard: Any final words of wisdom?

Ash: Yes, when hiking in bear country, always bring along a friend who is slower then you. oh, and be sure to pick up a copy of Eve Vampire Diva this December.
