AXEL MEDELLIN MACHAIN
Artist of Fablewood

by Richard Vasseur - (Posted: 9/30/2007)

Axel Medellin Machain

Richard: Where were you born and raised?

Axel: I WAS BORN IN GUADALAJARA, MEXICO, IN 1975. IT'S THE SECOND LARGEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY, AND THE PRETTY ONE. I'VE LIVED HERE ALL MY LIFE.

Richard: What was it like growing up there?

Axel: ACTUALLY, ECONOMICAL TURMOIL AND SOCIAL UNREST ASIDE, THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO GROW UP. KINDA HAVE SOME MIND SCARS FROM CATHOLIC SCHOOL, THOUGH (IN A "DANGEROUS LIVES OF ALTAR BOYS" WAY). DAD RAN AWAY BEFORE I WAS BORN, SO MOM TOOK DOUBLE DUTIES.

Richard: Why do you enjoy creating art?

Axel: BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT COMES NATURALLY TO ME! I'VE BEEN DRAWING SINCE THE DAY I LEARNED WHAT A CRAYON WAS FOR. I LIKE THE FEELING OF TAKING SOMETHING OUT OF MY WICKED MIND AND GETTING IT ON PAPER FOR THE WORLD TO SEE. MI GRANDPA BOUGHT ME COMIC BOOKS EVERY DAY (IN THE EIGHTIES, WE HAD MEXICAN WEEKLY REPRINTS OF FIVE ORIGINAL MARVEL SERIES, JUST IMAGINE...) AND I COULDN'T STOP DRAWING EVERYTHING I SAW ON THE SCREEN, I'VE ALWAYS LOVED CREATING MONSTERS AND ROBOTS AND STUFF. IT'S SIMPLY WHAT I KNOW HOW TO DO BEST.

Richard: Do you do much work as a colorist?

Axel: I'M WORKING ON THE COLORS FOR A NEW SERIES BY FECOMICS CALLED "THE FRACTURE", TO APPEAR IN NOVEMBER OR SO. I COLORED SOME WEBCOMIC LAST YEAR THAT KINDA DRIFTED AWAY. I PREFER COLORING MY STUFF WHEN POSSIBLE.

Richard: What is your contribution to "Fablewood"?

Axel: I WROTE AND DREW A SHORT STORY CALLED "THE ANCIENT PACT". IT'S A LONG JOKE THAT'S BEEN DANCING IN MY MIND FOR SOME YEARS AND I FINALLY GOT TO IT. IF I TELL THE SUBJECT I SPOIL THE UNCHLINE, BUT IT STARTS AS A VICTORIAN TAVERN FIST FIGHT THAT GOES INCREDIBLY WEIRD...

Richard: What is it like working with William Ward?

Axel: WILLIAM'S CRAZY ENOUGH TO GET ON THIS PROJECT, SO THAT HELPS (LAUGHS)... ACTUALLY, IT'S BEEN A BREEZE. EVERYTHING'S BEEN DONE THROUGH THE INTERNET, AND HE'S BEEN PRETTY MUCH AN IDEAL EDITOR. HE HAD THE IDEA OF MAKING THE STORY IN A VICTORIAN SETTING, ACTUALLY.

Richard: What is "Laura's Bazaar"?

Axel: LAURA'S BAZAAR IS A WEBCOMIC I CREATE AND FROM TIME TO TIME UPDATE IN http://www.webcomicsnation.com/nancynismo/ IT'S ONE OF MY PET IDEAS: LAURA D'LEON IS THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF SPANISH EXPLORER PONCE DE LEON. SHE'S LAZY, A TOTAL SLACKER AND DRINKS TO A COMA EVERY DAY. BUT SHE'S JUST INHERITED A STORE WHICH IS FILLED WITH EVERY SUPERNATURAL, MYTHICAL OR IMAGINED CREATURE AND OBJECT TO EVER EXIST. AND SHE STARTS GETTING IDEAS FOR MARKETING ALL THAT STUFF. HER IDEAS USUALLY TURN INTO WORLD-ENDING SCENARIOS, THOUGH. SHE'S KINDA AIDED BY HER BEST FRIEND, TUNA THE MINI-MERMAID, AND HER ASSISTANT MOZART THE SATYR. I WISH I COULD DO THIS WEEKLY, I HAVE TOO MUCH FUN TELLING LAURA'S MISADVENTURES.

Richard: How does it feel to have a story in Heavy Metal?

Axel: IT'S GREAT! I'VE WANTED TO HAVE A STORY IN HM SINCE I CAN REMEMBER. AS HARLAN ELLISON SAID, "WHO CAN RESIST BEING PART OF A LEGEND, EVEN A SECOND-GENERATION ONE?"... IT'S A THRILL BEING IN THE SAME ISSUE WITH LUIS ROYO, BORIS VALLEJO AND JULIE BELL... I'LL TRY TO BECOME A REGULAR THERE.

Richard: What was this story about?

Axel: THE STORY WAS WRITTEN BY R.G. LLARENA AND IT'S CALLED "SHATTERED MEMORIES", IT'S ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HUMANS GO TO CONQUER ANOTHER PLANET, AND THE INHABITANTS OF THAT PLANET TRY TO RESIST.

Richard: Do you prefer drawing females?

Axel: OH, YES. ALL OF MY STORIES ARE ABOUT WOMEN. THEY ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL.

Richard: What is the "Wonderful Lisa Da Vinci"?

Axel: LISA DA VINCI WILL BE MY MAGNA OPUS, ONE OF THESE DAYS... IT'S THE STORY OF THE DAUGHTER OF LEONARDO DA VINCI, AND HOW HER UNBELIEVABLE INVENTIONS CHANGE THE WORLD FOREVER (OR DESTROY IT FIVE HUNDRED YEARS EARLY, MAYBE)... IRON SOLDIERS, WOOD ROBOTS, BAMBOO EXOSKELETONS AND ATLANTEAN SPACESHIPS... THIS WILL BE THE STEAMPUNK STORY TO END THEM ALL... AND ALMOST ALL OF THE WICKED CHARACTERS WERE REAL!

Richard: What future projects do you have planned?

Axel: RIGHT NOW, I'M DRAWING A MINISERIES FOR PLATINUM STUDIOS CALLED "THE INCURSION" (I DIDN'T WIN THE CHALLENGE, BUT I DID GET WORK, HOW'S THAT?) I'M WORKING ON MORE STORIES FOR HEAVY METAL, I'M TRYING TO GET MY MIND DAUGHTERS LISA AND LAURA PUBLISHED, I'M DOING STORYBOARDS AND CONCEPT ART FOR A MOTION PICTURE TO BE SHOT NEXT YEAR, AND I'M GETTING MARRIED NEXT YEAR, TO MY FIANCE… AURORA. KINDA HAVE MY HANDS FULL.

Richard: What comics did you read as a child and do you read now?

Axel: AS A CHILD, ALL OF THE KIRBY MARVEL STUFF. SPIDER-MAN I KEPT READING TILL COLLEGE. NOW, HELLBOY IS TOP OF MY LIST, AND ANYTHING BY KEVIN NOWLAN, FRANK CHO OR WARREN ELLIS NEXT.

Richard: How can someone contact you?

Richard: MY CONTACT EMAIL IS AXEL.MEDELLIN@GMAIL.COM , AND MY HOMEPAGE IS http://nancynismo.deviantart.com/

Richard: Any last words of wisdom?

Axel: BOYS AND GIRLS... KEEP TRYING. SOMETIMES YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT, BUT EVENTUALLY IT HAPPENS.
