Richard: What do you hope to accomplish when you write and draw BGs?
Jinky: I hope to entertain the readers. I want to be able to attract fans of sexy, pretty comic book art, and I want to tell a fun story that everybody will enjoy. And I’m doing it in my third language, so I'm hoping not to mess things up too badly. (Laughs.)
Richard: BG's shows us a Kapre and Duwende what are these creatures?
Jinky: The Kapre` is a mysterious, giant, hairy creature spotted in the woods in the Philippines, often - -for some reason - -smoking a giant cigar. The Duwende are lawn gnomes! (Laughter) Think of them as scary little dwarves. Both are right of out myth in the Philippines.
Richard: The Overseer is introduced in BGs # 2 what is his tie-in to Jinky?
Jinky: The character is her father's employer -- with his own wild backstory and ability. He's based on Ryan, a good friend of mine.
Richard: Will we be seeing more new characters showing up?
Jinky: Oh, yes! You make an appearance in the new series too, Rich!
Richard: Michelle's new body suit and Jinky's staff have certain abilities what are they?
Jinky: The staff extends and is eclectically-charged. Michelle's bodysuit, used by me in the first mini-series, glows so it's perfect for late-night mystery-solving. I wear a new adventure costume in an upcoming issue too, by the way.
Richard: How would you describe the differences in personality between Jinky, Michelle and Katie J.?
Jinky: Well, they are all based on real people by those names. Michelle is more moody and more musical than I. Kat is certainly the most acid-witted and analytical of us all.
Richard: Wilfred is a plush toy that is alive, how did he become this way?
Jinky: It's a secret! (Laughs) AS BANZAI GIRL: #4 explained, Wilfred was imbued with alien life-essence filtered through a mother's love for her child. As such, Wilfred is alive and well and quite protective of Kat.
Richard: What is Glass House Graphics and what has it meant to your career?
Jinky: Glass House is a massive talent agent and graphics studio, with over a hundred artists from all over the world -- and with offices in Brazil and the Philippines. They also teach Creating Comics Seminars everywhere, which is how I was introduced to them. They're my agents now and have negotiated the deals for BANZAI GIRLS, AVALON HIGH, and other things. You can find them at www.glasshousegraphics.com
Richard: What occupies you during your non working hours?
Jinky: Life! Eating, reading, singing karaoke, family stuff, and traveling. I just came back from Wizard World Chicago Con, and in a few weeks I'll be flying back to the Philippines to stay for five or six weeks.
Richard: You have started branching out doing other artwork for other comics do you plan to continue this?
Jinky: Sure! For awhile, until I get too tired or too bored with it. I'm well into the second volume of AVALON HIGH for TokyoPop, and it's twice as big as the first volume. I'm also developing a proposal with another writer for a manga project called DANGEROUS SECRETS, and I'll be showing it to TokyoPop at the end of the summer.
Richard: Did you enjoy interpreting Meg Cabot's writing into pictures for "Avalon High: Coronation"?
Jinky: Yes! It's very different to me, drawing someone else's story, but I’m enjoying it.
Richard: How many issues of "Avalon High: Coronation" will there be and will you be working on them all?
Jinky: Well, CORONATION is one volume. The second volume I’m working on now will have a different sub-title. I think there's gonna be three total books. I hope to do them all.
Richard: What comics besides ones you work on would you recommend?
Jinky: THUNDERBOLTS with Mike Deodato art. The upcoming SERENITY with Will Conrad art, because SERENITY was a great movie based on the FIREFLY Joss Whedon TV series, and it's all-new stories by Joss. I also loved JACK HIGHTOWER, a graphic novel illustrated by Fabio Laguna for Dark Horse, which was written by animator Will Vinton.
Richard: You have a website at www.jinkycoronado.com what can people expect to find there?
Jinky: Updates - -as soon as my webmaster finds time. I do lots of art and photos that I hope will go up soon. Meantime, they should check out the message boards -- those are quite lively. My website has hundreds of photos, illos, wallpapers, and special things.
Richard: Any final words for all the fans of BG's?
Jinky: Thanks for being there. Hugs to all!
