Allen: Tell us something about yourself.
Kevin Moyers: Wow, uh, I seem to grow a lot of hair on my left shoulder. Just the left, not the right. Odd. Too personal? Okay. How about I just tell you about where I am right now. It was a long road to get to this point, but I'm steadily working on several projects, looking forward to getting married to my wonderful girlfriend Jennifer and finally starting a family.
I also have some of the best friends a guy could ask for. We have a blast working together on all this nonsense. Mad crazy props to Dave, Sandy, Jeff, Gabe, John, Dan, Craig and anyone I may have forgotten. Raise the roof, what, what and so on. All in all, I couldn't be happier.
Allen: What was the first comic book you ever read?
Kevin: Hmm, that's tough. I'd have to guess Archie Comics at the barber shop I went to as a kid. There was some Richie Rich in there too. The funny thing is that they were always mixed in with a stack of Playboys. I did always read the Sunday comics in the newspaper, too. I did learn one thing from comic strips. Hagar wasn't so horrible after all. He was actually kinda cuddly.
Allen: How did you get involved in the comic book industry?
Kevin: I had a great idea for a book and started writing. After that, I started on Scorn. I'm still working on the first book idea, and hopefully we'll see something on it soon.
Allen: Brief us about your upcoming comic book called Scorn.
Kevin: To be very brief, it's a teenage vigilante story. It has a great emotional edge to it. There is a lot of teen angst in the main character.
Allen: Who are some of the characters in Scorn?
Kevin: Michael Riggs is our hero. He's a rage filled nineteen-year-old who witnessed the murder of his best friend. Sammi is a troubled woman who Michael rescues from the gang he is trying to destroy. Robert Torres is the head of La Maquina, the biggest gang in Chicago. He is the man who murdered Michael's friend.
Allen: When can we find this comic book on the stands?
Kevin: June 9 is the target release date.
Allen: Who are the writer and artist of Scorn?
Kevin: I wrote the first two solo, and co-wrote the third and fourth books with David Hayes, who just had a short printed in Starship Troopers. Philipp Neundorf is the artist from top to bottom. He did everything from the pencils down to the lettering.
Allen: How did you find Philipp Neundorf as your artist?
Kevin: I had an ad looking for short comics online, and I liked the style he used in one called Gunn. I asked him to do Scorn and he got it done in no time.
Allen: How did the concept of Scorn come about?
Kevin: It's an old story I came up with when I was fifteen. It was always a vigilante story, but it evolved from being a superhero book to a more realistic story.
Allen: What conventions will you be attending or have attended?
Kevin: I have been to Chicago, Phoenix and San Diego. I am going to try to make an appearance at as many as possible this summer, but I have a heavy shooting schedule on a new movie and a new TV pilot.
Allen: How can someone contact you?
Kevin: www.myspace.com/kevinmoyers is the best way. Scorn has a page at www.myspace.com/scornunleashed . Also check www.abnormalent.com . That site will feature comics very soon.
Allen: What are your hobbies and recreational activities? Is it true that you do stand up comedy routines?
Kevin: I do stand-up whenever I can. I'm actually working on getting my own headlining show together. I also do a bit of acting and writing. I actually have a film called "Blown" coming out on July 24 on DVD. You can find it on Netflix and anywhere else you get videos.
Allen: If you can have 6 dinner guests, 3 fictional and 3 real-life from any time period, who would those 6 people be and why?
Kevin: Fictional: Charly Gordon (Flowers for Algernon), John Shaft (Shaft) and Jesus (The Bible). Real-life: Jon Stewart (Comedian), Thomas Edison (Inventor) and Bill Clinton (President). I have no idea why I would choose these people. I just think this list makes me sound interesting.
Allen: If you could go into any time machine, what year would you stop at and tell us why.
Kevin: I think I would go back to 1994, when I was 18, and I would give myself sports results to take to Vegas like Biff did in Back to the Future 2. I'd be living high on the hog now.
Allen: What TV shows, movies, cartoons do you like?
Kevin: I think the best show on TV right now is Scrubs. I honestly don't watch much TV anymore, but I love sitcoms. I'd give Popeye top honors for cartoons, but Futurama and Drawn Together also stand out in my book. I think as far as movies go, I just like to be entertained. My top favorites have to be Half Baked, Reservoir Dogs, Back Woods, Fight Club and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Eclectic mix, I'd say.
Allen: What books do you enjoy?
Kevin: I love books written by comedians. My favorite has to be "Naked Pictures of Famous People" by Jon Stewart.
Allen: What comic books do you read now?
Kevin: None, really, to be honest, but after seeing 300, I'm inspired to start grabbing some graphic novels. That and Thirty Days of Night will be among my first.
Allen: What gives you your creative energy?
Kevin: My girlfriend and my friend’s plant seeds and I make them grow. I also just like to watch people. Their absurd mannerisms fascinate me.
Allen: If your comic book became a movie, who would play the character parts and why?
Kevin: I'm not too sure. I think a Rose McGowan type would be great for Sammi, and I love Danny Trejo, so I'll throw him out there for Robert. Michael needs to be a new face. I don't see anyone out there that would work for him, although Haley Joel Osment could be a guy who could pull it off. I'm not kidding. I think he's great.
Allen: This ends the interview, any encouraging words of wisdom?
Kevin: I say just do what makes you happy. That works for me.
